Illustration Friday - RACING

She heard a strange thump and her heart started racing.

Finished! I added washes of color over the blue, and used an HB pencil and some colored pencil for linework/detail, and to give it some atmosphere. I loved working quickly at this size! I finished in less than 6 hours. Hope you like!

Step 4. The piece starts to come alive with a blue underpainting. As you can see, I'm working small (5"x5"), due to time constraints. It's not done yet- more to come!

Step 3. I traced over the previous sketch using my lightbox. Since I'll be painting this one, I'm using Aquerelle ColdPress Watercolor paper. When I trace, I draw very lightly, so the sketch is hard to see.

Step 2. This is the next step of the sketch. I traced over the first sketch, and then tightened up the sketch, adding some fun details.

She heard a strange thump and her heart started racing.

This is a work in progress for this weeks IF prompt, "Racing". I'm going to show my process here so you can see how I work. This idea just instantly popped into my mind, so I grabbed a pencil and some cheap printer paper and scribbled it down quickly, no thinking, no judging, just pure and happy scribbling. I think it's completely amazing when that happens, when you just experience a vision of your painting or sketch before you've even really thought about it. It's amazing because you've connected with something greater than you, and something, an energy, is working with you and through you. Let's call it Universe. The Universe is by its very essence, a creative entity. And it wants nothing more to create through you, because YOU are connected to the Universe (or God, or Cosmos, or however you'd like to call it). Ok, you get what I'm saying so just come back in a day or two to see the evolution of this IF sketch (and you can bet that monster is smiling under there, happy as can be under the bed, where he can watch out for his friend, even if he might startle her a little at first).

Hey, and also you guys, go ahead and share your IF link for Racing here in the comment box. That way, I can check it out easily and comment back:) Plus, I get to see all the creative goodness!

  7. Oh, I think this is the hardest thing... to capture the initial idea in my head! I will be watching for how yours progresses! I spent all afternoon trying to sketch what I'm imagining but I just can't get it to come out onto paper like I'm seeing it. I really love your style and the innocence and yes... bliss.. your characters have!

  9. Bethany, it sounds like a bit of resistance is happening in you, and that something is getting lost in translation (from your minds eye to the paper). Try this. Take a step back from your sketch and just sit quietly for 10 minutes. Close your eyes. Ask for guidance, and just hold that question or request in your mind. If your attention wanders, just come back to that question. As an example, you might say "God (or Cosmos or Universe, whatever may fit your beliefs) please work through me and express through me." Then spend a few minutes studying every detail of the picture in your mind. Look at it from different angles and view points (from a cats eye view and/or from way up from the clouds or ceiling looking down). Note even the smallest detail no matter how seemingly insignificant. I had a teacher who always said, 'Draw what you see, not what you think you see." You might find that after doing this light meditation on your sketch, something beautiful will happen:)

  18. How fun! Reminds me of a piece I created a few years ago.....lots of fun and I love that it is a quick piece. I have really missed working on new pieces for IF. For the past 2 years my time is all wrapped up in children;s books and I have had not created anything new that is my own since 2008! Kudos to you. This is a fun piece.
